In 1837 Queen Victoria took the throne at age eighteen. At age twenty one she married Prince Albert. Together they had nine children - four sons and five daughters: Victoria, Bertie, Alice, Alfred, Helena, Louise, Arthur, Leopold, and Beatrice.
Her reign as the Queen lasted 63 years and 7 months, longer than any other British monarch and her reign is the longest of any female monarch in history. The time of her reign is known as the Victorian period, an era of industrial, political, scientific and military progress within the United Kingdom. The national pride connected with the name of Victoria - the term Victorian England, for example, stemmed from the Queen's ethics and personal tastes, which generally reflected those of the middle class.
On Dec. 14th 1861 Albert died from typhoid fever. Victoria remained in self-imposed seclusion for ten years. This genuine, but obsessive mourning played an important role in developing the Victorian mentality.
