The largest inhabited castle in the world, Windsor Castle in Berkshire county dates back to the time of William the Conqueror. Along with Buckingham Palace and Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh, the castle is one of the principal residences of the British monarch. Many queens and kings of England and Great Britain have had an influence on the evolution and construction of the castle. It has acted as a fortress, palace, and prison. Queen Elizabeth I and her court fled to the castle in avoidance of the Bubonic Plague. Following the English Civil War, Oliver Cromwell's New Model Army used the castle as a headquarters. Several parts of the building have been damaged and reconstructed throughout history.
